I mean, this is pretty self-explanatory really. I figured that as I post reviews for all the books I read, why not dedicate some space to music, film & television as well – so here it is. Lists of my recent loves, hates* and looking forward-to watching/listenings.
*Hate is a strong word but in the interests of contrast – dislike doesn’t have the same ring!
TV
Loves
RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 9
So this is being released on Netflix every Saturday – it’s very weird to watch it every week like a normal person but it’s nice to make a little event of it. Rewatching the previous seasons was a staple in the university getting-ready-to-go-out ritual, and now being the wild adult that I am watching the new season is now part of the Sunday night pre-work ritual. At least my makeup has improved, even if my life is less exciting!
Nina Bo’nina Brown is my favourite to win.
The Seven Deadly Sins
Ok, I’ll start by saying this is problematic as hell. Anime can be un-PC and this is no exception. “Comedic” boob grabbing and skirt lifting aside, this is a nice little show. It’s nothing too complicated and unlike so much good anime it isn’t too long – there’s only two seasons so it’s not as overwhelming as something like One Piece or Fairy Tail. It’s cute and a fun watch.
Santa Clarita Diet
Sick, graphic and very funny. Not for the faint hearted but if you have a dark sense of humour you’ll love it.
Hates
The Client List
I was hoping for something ‘Secret Diary’-esque – cheeky, funny but sophisticated. What I got was a cheesy “drama” about a masseuse who starts offering her clients ‘extras’ to pay off her mortgage. Garfield did Jennifer Love Hewitt more justice. I didn’t even get through two episodes.
To-Watch/Looking Forward-tos
It’s Always Sunny Season 12
I recently binged all 11 seasons in preparation. Again. Enough Said.
13 Reasons Why
I’ve heard a lot about this, good and bad. I haven’t exactly decided if I’m going to watch it but I also want to know what all the fuss is about.
The Red Tent
I loved the book (see the review here!) so I’m just hoping the series does it justice.
Dear White People
I just noticed that this is out on Netflix now & I’m really looking forward to it.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine
I’m so behind it’s ridiculous. I miss Terry and his yoghurt.
Film
Loves
Fantastic Beasts
It goes without saying that I mean Johnny Depp aside. I don’t think he’s a bad Grindelwald, but I don’t believe he should’ve been given the part in the first place.
Nifflers are everything, though. The film is beautifully made and I just can’t stay away from The Wizarding World.
Pitch Perfect 2
I know I’m really late, but it’s still good. There was a lot to live up to after the first, but I think it did it pretty well. As with the first, it was a good balance of cheesiness and cynicism. Joe LoTruglio manages to steal the show in the few minutes of screen time he has and my crush on Skylar Austin has returned in full force.
Hates
Annie (2014)
I really wanted to love this, I did, but overall it was just kind of meh. Quvenzhane Wallis was cute and perky and a lovely Annie, and I did appreciate the Twilight rip-off but overall it was too much for me. I know Annie is meant to be cheesy but wow.
To-Watch/Looking Forward-tos
Moana
I’m so excited to see this and can’t believe I haven’t already.
Brooklyn
I read the book for A Level English Literature and am interested to see how well this translates to film – it was a good read but very little happens if I remember correctly so I’m not sure a film will work.
Kingsman: The Secret Service
I already told you, I’m really behind! I’ve been meaning to watch this for ages and never got round to it.
Book of Life
This was on when I was on a ferry once but I didn’t end up watching it. It looks like a gorgeous film and I really should watch it.
Paris is Burning
Because reading is what? Fundamental. Drag Race aside this looks like a really interesting film and I’m so happy it’s on Netflix because I’ve tried looking for it and had no luck at all.
Music
Ok so here’s where I admit that I don’t listen to new music much. I am in the habit of only listening to my own music and Spotify playlists, but some very exciting news in the world of pop punk has happened recently. Buckle your seatbelts, emo kids.
Loves
Hard Times – Paramore
I’ve warmed to this one pretty quick. Several of Paramore’s songs, old and new, are on my favourite playlists and I think this may join them.
Wish That You Were Here – Florence and the Machine (Miss Peregrine’s Soundtrack)
Saw Miss Peregrine’s in the cinema in October. Lasted the whole film without crying then this came on.
Water Under The Bridge – Adele
Belle – Beauty and the Beast (2017)
Emma Watson isn’t the strongest vocalist, but neither am I and I can actually sing (and crush, if I do say so myself) this arrangement. I love the reprise too.
New Morning – Darren & Chuck Criss
Great song, great cover.
Hates
I only have one recent music dislike right now because I don’t seek out new music much and we listen to Absolute 80s in the morning and LBC in the evenings (until Farage comes on at 7) – I’m behind but I’m not 30 years behind! It’s a given that Farage would be on here if he did music, but thank god he doesn’t.
Galway Girl – Ed Sheeran
Ok it’s not the worst but I’m just so bored of the stereotypes, man. I mean Ceilidh, whisky and Van Morrison? Seriously. Move over, manic pixie dream girls – manic leprechaun dream girls are the new thing, apparently. It’s catchy, I’ll give him that, but disappointing when his cover of The Parting Glass is so beautiful.
To Listen/Looking Forward To
After Laughter – Paramore
Duh.
Mania – Fall Out Boy
Fall Out Boy (AKA my boys) announced their new album Mania on Thursday (Patrick’s birthday) and it’s safe to say I am very excited for it. They released the first single from the album, Young And Menace at the same time. I’m still unsure about it, but I also wasn’t sure about My Songs at first so what do I know. I like where it’s going and I’m excited to see their next step.
Lost Boys Life – Computer Games
I didn’t actually know this was out until researching for this. I do know that I will be Spotifying then probably buying the album soon.
This video is totally relevant and important.
